Fleas

Fleas are a wingless parasite found worldwide.

They feed off the blood of animals and humans. Fleas can be transferred from one host to another.

A flea bite is intensely itchy and secondary infections can be caused by scratching.

Signs of a flea bite are: •

• Extreme itchiness •
• A red swollen lump which may turn into a small blister a day later 

They usually occur around the feet and legs or under the dogs belly.

Adult fleas can survive for months without feeding and female fleas are often prompted to lay their eggs after feeding.

If fleas are found on the dog there are several treatments available to you. Always consult your vet with regard to what is best for your dog.

Prevention •

• Flea and egg killing spot treatments •
• Tablets, powders and solutions which kill the fleas after application •
• Flea collar

When fleas are found on your dog you may need to treat your house and environment. Your dog may also need treatment for tapeworm as fleas can transmit this parasite.
