Nail Cutting and Bleeding

As part of a dog’s regular grooming they will often need their nails clipped.

Dogs nails should be tipped and trimming to the top of the vein which runs through the nail.

Our groomers and staff are trained to clip nails - including black ones. However occasionally they can be clipped too close and bleeding may occur.

It is hard to see the vein in a black nail and therefore you usually find this is when bleeding occurs.

It can be alarming when dogs nails bleed as the blood flow is rapid and it can often take a while to clot.

At Scooby Dooz, we use a special powder which is placed onto the nail and can be effective in controlling the bleeding. If your dog’s nails bleed you will be given an accident report form to make you aware.

Bleeding nails can also occur from playing in the daycare environment. Dogs nails may be worn down from all the running and playing.
